This is Zeppelin LZ 4, a German experimental airship first flown on 20 June 1908. Amongst its successes was a flight over Switzerland lasting 12 hours. During a disastrous landing it was destroyed in its own flames. The life of an airship. Poetic, I think. (Wikipedia)

First Flight of “La France”

On the 9th of August 1884, airship La France made aviation history. That story is the inspiration behind my first music for Forgotten Fields. Ever since I heard “Airships” by VNV Nation, Futureperfect (2002), zeppelins have captured my imagination. Writing my first music on the theme seemed the natural thing to do. Below are two tracks, “August, 1884” and “Maiden Voyage”. “August, 1884” is a summary of the La France story read by yours truly. “Maiden Voyage” describes what I hear when I imagine a great airship gliding in the sky above, its enormous, long shadow creeping over the grounds below. (Stories High is my “try everything” project. I’ll migrate all the Forgotten Fields tracks here, in the future.)
The Seven Flights of the Dirigible “La France”

A map detailing the seven flights of the dirigible (airship) La France, 1884-5. Its first flight was the first successful round trip made by an airship, ever. La France made five successful round trips.
